Happy New Year!
New Year's Eve, 2015. Ken and I are getting ready to watch the PBS marathon of "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson. We love a great mystery.
Our world continues to become more of a mystery to me - ISIS, "affluenza," racism, police shootings, immigration - these are just a few of the headlines of 2015. How are we to respond? We can turn our heads and look the other way; become consumed in despair; get angry; or maybe, just maybe there is another way. From Isaiah 11:6 (NRSV) The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them."
What if 2016 were deemed "The Year of the Christ Child"? What if we recognized that our behaviors and attitudes either make a way for Christ - or they don't? There is no treading water. What difference could that make in our churches, our community, our world?
"O come, O come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel..." May 2016 be the year when we proclaim the mystery of our faith. God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God!
